Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Counselling

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a type of Counselling or Therapy that involves you addressing maladaptive behaviours and thoughts. The idea is that feelings can be difficult to change but if you can challenge unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours there is a ripple effect to your feelings which should improve. Sounds simple huh?

It’s not quite as simple as it sounds as much of what we do and think, happens at a functioning level that we are barely aware of much of the time – a bit like you don’t have to think about using a knife and fork you just do it. With the support of your Counsellor you can learn to identify the unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours that have become a habit but that are no longer helpful to you. These might be thoughts that lead to you to catastrophise situations, predict the future or over generalise. The thoughts usually tend to have a negative spin which leads you to feel pretty rubbish or behave in a way that impacts on your behaviour for example you might start to avoid situations that are uncomfortable for you.

Your GP may have ‘prescribed’ Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as a type of therapy that is suitable for your particular condition. My view is that Counselling or Therapy should not be labelled as a ‘treatment’, it is not something that is done to you, it is a process and a journey that you engage in and you make changes where you think they need to be made. As Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a ‘Therapy’ the same applies.
