Depression can be so difficult to overcome. It zaps your energy, your motivation and your life. Some of the most common symptoms include feeling low, tearful, irritable, hopeless or sad. You may experience thoughts of escapism, suicide or wanting to harm yourself in some way. Physically you may notice a change in your appetite, a loss of libido or have unexplained aches and pains but these are just some of the things you might experience, the list could go on and on.
The level of Depression can range from being mild to moderate to severe, depending on the individual. This can be further complicated by the fact that sometimes it is so difficult to understand why you have it. Many clients want to feel like they have a reason for the fact that they feel like they are stuck in a deep black hole or treading through treacle all the time. Whilst sometimes Depression can be reactive, in other words a response to a particularly stressful life event often there is no obvious reason for you to develop depression, it can just sneak up on you.
It can be really difficult to consider Counselling when you are feeling so low or your motivation is non-existent, the timing has to be just right for you, when you feel ready. Whether you have a diagnosis from your GP or you have been struggling with your feelings for a while clients often report a slight positive change in their feelings from simply making an appointment and taking the first step. It’s important that you make your own appointment, not only for Confidentiality reasons but as part of the process of helping you feel empowered as opposed to the disempowerment that depression brings along with it.
